Five Things Salon Owners Forget When Purchasing New Chairs

02.17.2020

New salon chairs are a big investment. There are so many options available, choosing the right chair for your needs quickly becomes overwhelming. And while price and style are critical factors to keep in mind, don’t forget the following considerations when it comes time to purchase new chairs!

Comfort (Not Just for the Client)

Clients don’t want to sit in an uncomfortable chair for hours, so make sure the chair provides the necessary support and comfort for longer sessions.

Remember that the chair needs to not only be comfortable for the client, but also for the stylist as well; chairs that allow stylists to easily and seamlessly move the client up, down, and around to get to hair from every angle are essential to keeping the stylist comfortable for long hours.

Measure the Space

It might seem obvious, but don’t forget to take spatial restrictions into consideration. Measure the spaces to ensure that chairs will not only fit comfortably, but that they will still comply with any state-specific handicap ordinances or other guidelines.

Read Reviews

Be sure to thoroughly research the options. Reviews provide excellent insight into the real-world application of a product. Read them all—the good, the bad, and the ugly; since many sites promote only the products they sell, read reviews from multiple sites for a broader perspective.

Don’t Forget a Warranty

While new chairs are great at first, consider what happens when they start to wear, or if something goes wrong, such as the hydraulics failing. Avoid purchasing a chair with no warranty, as this often indicates a product with a short lifespan and limited customer support.

Make sure the chair supplier stands behind their product, so that if something goes wrong, you’re not stuck with a bad investment.

Choose Practical Material

Salon chairs are subject to all sorts of chemical spills and abuse, so durability and cleanability are key criteria. The material plays a huge role in the longevity (and perception) of a chair; a stained and worn chair isn’t inviting and may leave clients with a negative impression of the salon. So while it might be tempting to go for a chic fabric, it’s better to opt for something more practical.

Leather and other fabrics wear much faster and are more likely to hold onto stains than vinyl, which is not only durable, but super easy to keep clean.
